Raan Kan Eang, Melbourne CBD

A great little Thai restaurant that I discovered on Menulog. They were offering a 30% discount, and I was feeling particularly ravenous and chose them, simply because I could maximise the volume of food that I procured.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes and the freshness of the ingredients. Unlike some of the previous vendors that I had ordered from, the vegetables were crisp and sweet.

Din Tai Fung, Melbourne CBD

A household name across Asia and Australia, it was a glorious day when DTF opened its doors in Melbourne. It has chosen to take up residence on the topmost level of the Emporium and the floor space is expansive. Even so, it has still chosen to adopt a strict seating system whereby diners don't get a table unless the whole group is there.

When we did earn a table we were given menus each and a DIY order form. Once we had figured out what we wanted, we hailed down a waitress who confirmed our verbally order and fed it through electronically. It all seemed to be very efficient.

Not too soon after, our food started to arrive and we busied ourselves tucking into the delicious selection of DTF's famous XLB's, their prawn dim sums, and two types of chili wontons.

For dessert, we placed our faith in J's capable hands and trusted her recommendations, ending up with red bean and taro spring rolls, and taro ice cream.

Kangaroo Smile, Carlton

Nothing about this restaurant makes too much sense. But the food turned out to be good and heartwarming.
The name is strange, the d├ęcor is a bit kooky, and  the music streams from a Youtube playlist.

As we chowed down on our stir fry and slurped our noodle soup, we tried to hypothesise on the rationale behind the odd name. Our most plausible theory was that perhaps these were Vietnamese owner / chefs who hoped to capture many of the tourists who frequent Lygon St by enticing them with the restaurant's kangaroo offerings...
